Chapter 14

The next morning Alivia was in the same condition but, to Emma’s delight, Charles was awake. And he was not happy.

“Get away from me!” he screamed, scooting back in the bed, eyes wild. Emma witnessed this the instant she walked in the medical building.

Three sisters stood by, trying to calm him down. The grand matron remained by Alivia but watched the drama unfold with an amused smile. Kylie had gone to visit her mother and Emma wished she was there right then.

Emma approached Charles. “Charles, it’s me, Emma.” She waved her hands, attempting to get his attention. “You’re safe.”

At first her words had no effect on the man, for he continued to scream and swat away any hands belonging to sisters trying to help him. When she repeated herself his eyes focused on her and he said, “Emma, is that you?”

“Yes, it’s me.” She took a step toward him. “You’re safe, you’re safe.”

His eyes darted between the three sisters, suspicion heavy in them. “Who are these women?”

“They’re...sisters of a coven.” She raised her hand when his eyes opened wide. “But they have magic like us. They won’t hurt us.”

“How do I know you’re real?” Charles challenged. “This could be a trick. Emma could be dead!”

Emma’s shoulders sagged in frustration. Why was he this distrustful? Had his mind been damaged by the injury? Or did he have some experience with covens of women? “Ask me something only I would know.” That was admittedly very little considering they had only met in Ironforge.

“What is your father’s name?” he asked.

“Jeremy,” Emma replied without hesitation.

“Wrong!” Charles crowed. “Wrong, wrong, wrong!” He held his head in his hands and rocked back and forth.

Emma looked to the grand matron and pleaded with her eyes. What was wrong with the man?

She rose from her seat and strode over. “It is possible his mind was wounded during the fighting, either from a blow or infection from the wound spreading to it.”

Emma had never heard of infections in the brain. She’d seen insane people over the years, though. But Charles hadn’t been insane before he woke up. “What can we do to help him?” She stopped, sensing something. She closed her eyes and sensed Charles reaching out to the walls with his magic. The elements within the wall vibrated. Was he trying to bring down the building?

The grand matron must have had the same thought, for Emma sensed her reaching out with her own magic to combat Charles’ magic. The stone nearest Charles’ bed softened and solidified, back-and-forth. Then Charles gave up on that and summoned fire, drawing the heat from the room - Emma saw the waves of heat swirling toward a space above his hand. She braced herself to intercept the flames if he attacked her or the grand matron.

“Stop!” Alivia shouted.

Emma spun around and gaped. Alivia walked forward from her bed. She passed the grand matron, eyes never leaving Charles. The flows of magic had stopped, though the flame persisted, as Charles’ eyes opened in surprise.
